Alice Mcclain
Young
Apr 26, 1942 — Dec 14, 2025
Leawood
Alice McClain Young, formerly known as Alice Ann McClain, passed away in Leawood, Kansas on December 14, 2025, at the age of 83.
Alice was born on April 26, 1942, at Ellwood General Hospital in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania. Her early years were shaped by frequent family moves throughout Pennsylvania, Florida, and Ohio, due to her father's work for Bell Telephone, fostering in her a lifelong adaptability, curiosity, and adventurous spirit.
Alice graduated from Harding High School in Marion, Ohio, in 1960. That same year, her life took an extraordinary turn when she was crowned Miss Ohio in August. The honor led her to represent Ohio at the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Alice proudly shared that year with her mother, Betty, her father, Dave, and her sister, Lynda, traveling extensively and creating cherished memories.
She attended Cottey College in Nevada, Missouri, in September 1961 and graduated in June 1963.
In 1964, Alice moved to Columbus, Ohio, where she began a successful modeling career. She embraced motherhood with the birth of her daughter, Cynthia Drake Slaby, in 1969. Always adventurous and unafraid of new experiences, Alice relocated to Monrovia, Liberia in West Africa in 1972. While living abroad, she welcomed her twin sons, Timothy Kenyon Slaby and David McClain Slaby, experiences raising her family in Africa that deepened her strength and devotion to her children.
After returning to the United States in 1978–1979, Alice made her home in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, with a move to Ft. Walton Beach, Florida to pursue a career in real estate. While in Florida, she met the love of her life, Colonel Pearce "Pete" H. Young. They were married on November 15, 1980, and as a result of the marriage, Alice gained two sons, Bill and Steven, who were Pete's sons from a prior marriage. Pete and Alice shared a devoted partnership built on mutual respect, humor, and love for over 40 years.
The family moved to Nevada, Missouri, in 1986, where Pete taught Air Force ROTC at Nevada High School and Alice worked for many years as a legal secretary for Russell, Brown, Bickel & Breckenridge, where she was valued for her professionalism, intelligence, and calmness under pressure.
Following their careers, Pete and Alice retired to Kimberling City, Missouri, enjoying Table Rock Lake and Branson entertainment. Alice will be remembered for her kindness to everyone, her elegance, and her deep love for her family. She took great pride in being a mother and grandmother, and her joy was especially evident in the lives of her grandchildren. Her life was one of meaningful journeys, lasting friendships, and tremendous strength.
Alice is predeceased by her parents, David and Betty McClain, her sister, Lynda Wruck, her husband, Col. Pearce H. Young and her stepson, Steven Gerard Young. She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Drake Slaby; her sons, Timothy Kenyon Slaby and David McClain Slaby (Jenni); her stepson, William Pearce Young (Shelly); and her grandchildren, Luke McClain Slaby and Nicholas Drake Slaby.
Alice will be interred alongside Pete at the Missouri Veteran's Cemetery in Springfield, Missouri.
