Herman Lee
Stephens
Jul 31, 1953 — Aug 9, 2025
Galena
Herman Lee Stephens was born on July 31, 1953, in Galena, MO, to Velma Stephens. A lifelong resident of the area, Herman remained deeply rooted in his hometown and community throughout his life. After graduating high school, Herman worked in landscaping until his retirement. After retiring, he remained active and committed to caring for his beloved farm until the day he passed.
Herman married Wanda Hemphill. The two shared 19 years together until her passing. Herman later found love again and married Brenda Ainley. This union continued until his passing.
Affectionately known as "Grandpappy" by Brenda's grandchildren. Though not a sports enthusiast himself, he never missed an opportunity to support the children in their activities and proudly became one of their biggest fans.
Herman loved connecting with people. He enjoyed meaningful discussions, especially about the things that mattered most to him—his faith, his farm animals, and his deep knowledge of gardening and agriculture. He could quote scripture with ease and share practical wisdom about farming in a way that captivated and educated those around him. And if there was ever something he didn't know, he was eager to learn.
A faithful member of Hilltop Church in Galena, Herman was passionate about serving in the children's ministry. He took great joy in encouraging young people to grow in their faith and reach their full potential.
Herman is preceded in death by his mother, Velma Stephens; his first wife, Wanda Hemphill-Stephens; and several beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda Ainley-Stephens; stepdaughter Jeanetta Hayes-Smith, her husband, Jesse Smith, and their children Cameron, Haley, and Owen; and two cousins.
Herman went home to be with the Lord on August 9, 2025. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
